What I am learning about being a woman..

First and foremost! Thank you for being here.

I know I say it often, but I truly am grateful for the readers who have been here for the last year and a half, following along with all of the unraveling & growth.

And an absolute huge thank you to the newcomers who found themselves among my page.

The support, new & old, still makes my heart want to explode at times in gratitude & astonishment.

This post some would say is a little different than my previous year of writing, but only really in the content. As it is a topic that is near & dear to my heart and what I feel must be passed along, which has always been my reason for the pieces I’ve written. So you see, it’s not as different as you may think. Keep with me.

(Disclaimer: by no means am I an expert of this topic, or am really too concerned at this point of the “why” or more so the biological components behind it. This post is keeping it simple, because I feel like so much is over complicated these days.

I will attach many articles along the way, so that if you feel you want to dive deeper you have the resources to do just that.)

So how did I arrive here? On January 19th in this cute cafe in Berlin, MD sipping a coconut milk mocha talking to all of you about periods? A very fair question!

Lets rewind just a little shall we?

My aunt & “growth coach” (a title I just deemed her because I mean, what truth) introduced me to podcasts about five months ago. When I find something that catapults me into a new layer of myself, I latch on and feverishly dig head first into exploratory.

I listened to podcast everyday, on long drives I’d listen to three or four in a sitting. Through all the listening I finally landed on Untame the Wild Soul podcast. I was a goner really, engulfed in this woman’s grace and interview skills.

The question she asked at the beginning of every interview, “What is your favorite thing about being a women?”

Such a large percentage of these strong boss ladies would say, “having my cycle, bleeding every month, being able to track this constant cycle in my life when nothing else is constant.”

I was not sure at the time what cool aid these women were drinking, having my cycle was never magical or pleasant, going through 6 different birth control pills in a year, having 3 yeast and one bacterial infection in one month, just really nothing life changing about it, but this cool aid they were drinking made it seem so dang magical, so I decided to drop the story I had written about this part of my life, and at least research a little.

What has unfolded since has been nothing short of life changing.

This in depth understanding of my cycle unfolded slowly at first, and then really just catapulted to the forefront of understanding one day in Portugal. My partner and I had gotten into an argument the night before, a common argument we had actually. November 19th, I was at the worst in my cycle, had ran my body ragged all month and needed desperately to collapse into bed with not a soul to show up for, to just let my brain rest & weep. He could never quite grasp why I insisted on being alone so desperately, what seemed like randomly to him, at parts of each month. And you know, I didn’t understand either. I just knew I needed it, and needed him to understand. So I sought out an understanding, I went back and reread my journal looking for patterns or triggers.

Going back and reading:

October 18th- absolutely miserable with everything, writing how I felt suffocated by my partner, which at this point of life was just not true- but on that day, it couldn’t have been closer to the truth.

November 19th- desperately internally screaming to just go hibernate at 7pm, and being very challenging to talk to- I remember having it out with my momma that night (which is incredibly uncommon for me), and my partner thinking I wasn’t a very nice person. oops.

December 18th- my journal heading reads “no moon, no god, no feelings” (so internally dramatic on this day haha!)

Yesterday, January 18th- I put on my favorite sweater and couldn’t stand to even take a breath in it as I just felt myself crawling out of my own skin. Thinking “what is going on with me right now?” Peeking at the calendar & it suddenly making sense.

I hope it doesn’t feel as if I am rambling, I just find it so important in this growth that an understanding of the patterns that happen every month be recognized.

That day in the coffee shop in Portugal, I read numerous articles, watched a few videos and broke it down for myself. After coming home from Portugal, my partner asked me kindly to write on our calendar the days to be the most aware of. That was such an admirable gesture, and I will always appreciate him for taking that step to understand more. It wasn’t until I understood, that I was able to pass along how my body was really working and what it needed.

Okay okay, getting to the point of this post now!

Here is the schedule I have come up with and reference every month, the length is a little different for each, but the monthly break down is the exact same for every single women.

My favorite interview on that podcast was in summary, “everything in life changes and is not constant, how beautiful that we as women have one thing every single month that is constant, the same, easy to grasp & live by once we figure it out.”

Day 1-3 : first days of period- low energy, aches & pains

Day 3-5: estrogen rise = high energy, upbeat, get your body moving again!

DAY 5- 14 : Ovulation phase- these are your ‘best’ days in the month. Highest productivity, highest sex drive, desire to be social at its highest!

Day 6-9: you’re absolute ‘best’ days- break out that to do list & get to that HIIT class

Day 10-13: highest sex drive

Day 14-25: Luteal Phase- the roughest time of the month due to the rise in progesterone

Day 15-18: Cranky AF! (this is when the 18th & 19th pattern was realized for me)

Day 19-22: Break outs, just feeling yuck

Day 23-25: Libido at it’s lowest

Day 26-(until your bleeding begins again): PMS= Sore boobs, low energy, moody, whatever else that looks like for you.

I’m sure we are all very familiar with PMS, and knowing what that looks like for each of us. But I am sure some of you were not familiar with that rough Luteal Phase. For me, that was the biggest learning introduction to me, and also the most rewarding to recognize and work within myself.

Understanding your monthly cycle can improve your life. Knowing which time of the month your energy levels are highest, most sensitive and have the highest libido can make some great changes to how you handle your day to day life.

I have attached a charmingly created blank calendar that you are able to copy & paste into a document to then proceed with printing.

I’d recommend writing out the month, and then tracking & penciling in the different phases for yourself. An easy reference when going through your month.

I realize I have already given a lot of information on this post, and I don’t have any interest in losing any of you..

However, I do just want to add one more layer of what I have also found to be crucial & magical about my cycle, blame this part on on the second cup of espresso I just finished (oops).

I have linked my monthly cycle with the moon. (how many of you did I just lose?) ❤

Listen this is coming from the girl who a little over a year ago did not give a single thought to God, or spirituality. Following the moon? You really would have gone off the deep end now, I’d be completely tuned out of our conversation at this point.

But my godddd, literally (my god) has shown me why learning how in touch with the moon we all are is essential.

I was (once secretly) and now shamelessly open to publicly sharing how, obsessed with the moon I am. Some nights when I see it (forgetting it exist above us) I fill up with so much warmth, like that feeling you get when you’ve just been reconnected with a friend you haven’t seen in a year

My hardest point of each month, so happens to fall on the New Moon which means there is no visibility of the moon; so I sometimes finding myself aching to the core having no visual connection with the added layer of my hormones being wacky from the Luteal Phase, let’s cue the internal drama I swirl into. But having this knowledge allows me to remain in control. Knowledge is power, never forget that.

Back in the olddddd days before medicine and what not, women regularly bled with the moon. It was ceremonial.

An asbolute graceful & delicate read about the above in case you want to learn a little more, I’ll spare you all by going too deep into it all, and allow you that opportunity for yourself if your interested in learning more!– Moon & Me

So if your cycle is ‘normal’ you bleed with the New Moon (that’s the more commonly seen) or you bleed with the Full Moon.

A small blurb of what that means:

White Moon: If your body follows a White Moon cycle, you’ll tend to bleed during the new or waning moon. Since biodynamics have shown that the earth is most fertile during full moons (when you ovulate), this cycle is most traditionally linked to fertility and motherhood. If you are a “White Moon” woman, you’ll likely feel a surge in your intuition during your period, and will feel the urge to withdraw for nourishment and self-renewal. In other words, you’re tapped out energetically and have given the month your all—it’s “you” time.

Red Moon: This cycle follows the full moon, meaning that your body bleeds during the waxing or full moon and is most fertile during the new or waning moon. Because full and waxing moon phase energies are outgoing, vibrant, and creative, some feel this is counterintuitive to menstruation. Not so. In ancient times, the Red Moon cycle was associated with shamanism, high priestesses, and healers. Women who tend to menstruate with the full moon are said to focus their “darker” and more creative menstrual energies outward, rather than inward, in order to nourish and teach others from their own experience. Many times, women with this cycle will be more focused on self-growth, development, mentorship, and creativity.

I bleed with the Full Moon every single month, and it the most radiant & angelic experience.

I could probably carry on for another two hours, but I do believe I’ll wrap it up here! It’s a lot of information, and if nothing else I hope it allows you the curiosity to start learning more. Please feel free to contact me if you want to share your experiences or dive in deeper with me- I nerd out on this topic these days!

It’s your body, & you owe it to yourself to make it the best experience it can be.

With so much love, and appreciation!

“I will never be a morning person, as I am too in love with the moon…”
